Yes, My House Gets Messy... and So Does Yours

The following is an excerpt from a conversation I had with my husband several days ago:

Matt: This house is a mess.
Me: It is?
Matt: Well, yes. There are toys everywhere. Everyday I come home and have to step over toys and crap.
Me: OK. Yes, the house is a little messy right now but it's not always messy. Maybe you should should hire a house cleaner to come in a couple times a month if you aren't happy with how clean the house is.
Matt: I guess I figure, you know, you're home all day. I mean, I know you home-school but you still should be able to keep the house clean.
Me: I just look at him, wondering which 1960s sitcom we just got transported to. I'm thinking June Cleaver.
Me:
(laughing) You have NO idea.
Matt: About what?
Me: About just how messy this house really gets during the day and how much I really do clean up before you get home.
Matt: It can't be that bad.
Me: It is. Trust me, it is.
Matt: Well, then... leave it a mess. That way I can see how bad it gets.
Me: I'm not going to do that!
Matt: Why not? You say it gets messy. Maybe I'll appreciate what you do more.
Me: I'm not going to do that. No way. Then I'll have to clean it all up later. I prefer to do a little bit of damage control as we go through the day.
Matt: (shrugs) Oookaaayyy

So, I decided to take pictures. And since one reason I keep a blog is to share what my life is like as an everyday, average Supermom I'm going to post them for everyone else to see.

Yes, my house gets messy. Unless you don't have kids or you are neurotic, I'm willing to bet yours does too.

These pictures were taken at 4:00, after a day of homeschooling and errands.

Kitchen... cluttery

Unwashed dishes in the sink

The living room... the pillows and blankies are all over the floor because this is Nate's "bird nest". If you've read any of my blogs, you know Nate thinks he's baby bird.

The TV room... remnants of the boys' extra birdhouse/fort making material.

FYI, these are Matt's socks!

Now it's about 4:45-- about a half hour before Matt gets home.

Nate helps me wash the dishes. Clutter put away.

The living room... after the nest has been disassembled.

The TV room... minus dirty socks, toys, sheets, towels, etc.

I admit, I don't always get a chance to pick up the house as much as I was able to on this day. I didn't have to make dinner so that gave me a little extra time.

With that said, I never leave the house as messy as it gets during the day. I do this for my own sanity and so my husband doesn't have to come home to the disaster you witnessed in the before shots.

My points are:

1. To my fellow moms- everyone's house gets messy. Moms shouldn't be embarrassed by that when friends and neighbors drop by.

2. To all the husbands- don't complain about the house being a mess. Chances are, it looked MUCH worse before you came home!

I totally understand about the damage control. But where are all of you piles of laundry? Don't all good "SuperMoms" have piles of laundry through out the house? :)

Oh, they're there... I took pics of those but I didn't want to overwhelm anyone. In fact the SAME piles are still there since the day I took the pics. :)

ummm, matt should be thrilled to have you, my house is waaaaay worse. seriously, i'm going to take pictures and post them for you to show matt. i AM a neurotic cleaning freak, but it is just impossible to keep messes contained. and you are homeschooling, so you should be very proud. you are a great supermom, sara!!!

Oh I love this! SO funny... I had that same conversation with my DH recentl...who do they think we are anyway. Then when we leave and come back to a disaster they say "I am just not as experienced with this as you are..."ugg!

I can't believe how clean your "messy" pics are. I must live in a whole different world of what's acceptable. Then again, my husband doesn't seem to mind messes...I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. :)
